Joan C. Woodcox Short

I’ve been self employed since the age of twenty-four. I retired from the retail business in 2007. Since then I have gotten serious about writing books. My first non-fictional book was published in 2013, “I Saw the Face of God.” the second non-fictional book was published In 2014, “Abraham, Messenger from God.” I’m getting ready to publish my third book at the end of this year, “The South’s true colors” This book is fictional and a big difference for me. Non-fictional requires many hours of research but, fiction doesn’t require as much research. For me writing a novel is refreshing. But my heart is in non fictional works. I also spend a lot of time in perfecting the mechanic’s of putting a book together for publishing. Writing is not just about laying words on paper. writing requires thousands of hours in research and getting your work ready to be published. I have learned through many years of writing, that as a writer you have to embrace everything it takes to complete a book project. I’ve always heard that writing is a lonely profession but I find being alone very rewarding. It is a perfect world where you can make your characters behave as you want them to.

Inspiration

Words, books, peoples thoughts and actions spurs me forward. I never have to be encouraged to set down to write. There is a story in every person i meet. A writer can weave a story out of animals, people, flowers, water or even a train. Everything on this planet inspires me. But my main inspiration comes through God and what he has created for us all to enjoy.

Why Madison?

I moved to Madison from Oklahoma, but I am a Kentucky girl. I didn’t come here for writing but because it was close to three different metropolitan areas where work would be easy to find. I have lived here for over thirty-seven years. I can’t find the right words to describe how I think on Madison. Madison is a lot like God, who cannot be captured on a piece of paper or in a piece of art work. Madison holds its residence. Even if we leave we find our way back. Is it the beautiful Ohio River, our state park or the rolling hills that keep us here? Or is it as simple as, we feel closer to God here. However, I do write better here, then anyplace I have ever lived, and I have lived in many places.

Bio

In my case, if I wrote a bio on myself, it wouldn’t be what I learned from schooling. It would be on my street smarts and the way I was raised to meet life head on. My credentials for writing comes through my own determination and inspiration.  God gave me a gift to use and, I use that gift to the best of my ability. I’ve had three years of college in accounting, but always I’ve been a writer.
